  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup sanding sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat together shortening, granulated sugar, and egg using an electric mixer until creamy (3-4 minutes). Mix in boiled apple cider.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. Gradually add to wet ingredients on low speed until just combined.
  3. Cover dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Shape dough into tablespoon-sized balls and roll in sanding sugar. Place spaced on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 9–11 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
